Our Call to Action

Global, national, and local news frequently focuses on water pollution. Water pollution is affecting our health and that of the freshwater and ocean food sources upon which we depend. In Europe and the United States, strategies against chemical pollution of surface waters are being developed at multiple scales. European Union-wide regulatory efforts are already underway (Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC) and solutions are also being actively pursued by individual countries. The Clean Water Act is the primary federal law in the United States governing water pollution. Two of the most problematic forms of pollution affecting our water resources today are plastics and hydrocarbons.

Each year, an estimated 17.6 billion pounds of plastic enters the marine environment from land-based sources. This is equivalent to dumping a garbage truck full of plastic into our oceans every minute. Similarly, it is estimated that approximately 706 million gallons of oil enter the ocean every year via many sources: accidental spills or leaks, careless disposal or storage of oil and oil products, atmospheric deposition, and stormwater runoff from cities and farms.

Earthwise Sorbents reduces plastic pollution by recycling and repurposing foam and fabric waste into environmental clean-up products. Our sorbents address petroleum pollution by containing and cleaning up spills on land before they affect valuable aquatic resources or by effectively targeting a variety of hydrocarbons in aquatic environments.
